Patient Safety and Medical Terminology Translation

By Prime Star December 12, 2024 7 Min Read

With the rising number and intensity of diseases, it has become more than just important to gain medical knowledge. There was a time when we didn’t have a cure for the Influenza virus but now that virus, aka, flu has become just a small disease that we don’t even call a disease. So with evolution, we are finding cures for ailments we didn’t even once think we would get. With this evolution, there are other certain trends as well. For instance, translation was once a trend in the medical sector but it has become a necessity. So the role of the best translation agency is highly important here. One more evolution in the medical industry is the keen attention toward the reduction of hazards and complications that often arise during medical treatments. There is a proper term for this, patient safety.

This patient safety is the center of attention of this read. Here we are going to discuss what this concept is as well as how important it is in the medical industry. Other than that, we will also be talking about the role of medical terminology translation.

What is Meant By Patient Safety?

This whole concept revolves around the protection of patients. But does it sound weird, like protecting patients from what and who? Aren’t medical treatments supposed to save them from deadly outcomes? Surely, when a patient goes to a doctor, it’s for their good health. But you must have heard that during certain treatments, patients experience side effects. Patient safety works to minimize these harms and errors so that medical procedures are made 100% safe. It is all about creating a safe environment and safe space for the patients so that they can trust doctors and healthcare providers. The most common example of ensuring patients’ safety is keeping the medical instruments safe and sterilized. With the new ultrasonic cleaning, all medical instruments and devices are made completely harmless and all viruses and bacteria are killed.

All instruments such as scalpels, scissors, etc., are dipped in cleaning solutions that kill viruses and bacteria that survive in different pH. In this way, when doctors use clean instruments, patients have a very low chance of getting a new disease. This role of patient safety is highly important as it ensures less risk of infections and patients receive the best treatments in a safe and sound environment.

Talking About Medical Terminology Translation

So we have already mentioned how translation in the medical industry has become a necessity, not just a trendy thing that will die in a few days. This is because the medical industry aims to provide everyone with the best medical services despite linguistic, cultural, and geographical barriers. These barriers are met by medical terminology translation. This specific type of medical translation deals with the conversion of medical terms from one language to another. Medical terms are really complex and even hard to understand for the same language speaker. For instance, do you know what choledocholithiasis, cardialgia, or costochondritis is? Of course, not all of you are aware of these terms. Choledocholithiasis is the occurrence of gallstones in common bile ducts, costochondritis is chest wall pain in upper costochondral and sternocostal joints due to inflammation while cardialgia is just a fancy medical term for heartburn.

If these terms are hard for you to understand as a native English speaker, imagine the struggle of a Chinese or Japanese speaker. When the concepts of these terms are decoded in the simplest language, that’s when it becomes easy for a layman to understand these terms. And this is exactly what medical translators do. They translate the terms into the patients’ language so that they know what is going on in their bodies, and what treatments doctors suggest to them. A patient who knows about his/her medical procedures is more likely to get better soon in contrast to those who are completely unaware of their medical conditions. So these translations not only have a pivotal role in patient safety but in patient education as well.

Combining the Two

You must wonder why we are mixing these two terms but believe us they are very closely related. With the help of medical terminology translation, first of all, accurate communication is guaranteed. And the first step towards getting better health is when patients understand everything their healthcare practitioners tell them.

Increased Patient Education

Patient education allows patients to get a more immersive take on their treatments and medical prescriptions. Patients get to understand the side effects that can come with their procedures and how to tackle or lessen their impact. For instance, a heart patient who takes many high potency medicines suffers from stomach issues most of the time. Here the doctor’s job is to minimize those side effects and translation makes their patients understand it.

Patient Safety Improvement Programs

Healthcare providers deliver patient safety improvement programs that not only educate doctors and medical staff but also patients as well. With translation, patients are engaged in these programs to ensure safer patient care. There are medical safety programs that talk about the side effects of medicines and how to deal with those. Then there are system safety programs that solely talk about how medical devices can be used safely.

Final Words!

To sum up, patient safety is an important concept in the medical sector as it is involved in making sure that all procedures are done safely. We are aware that during certain medical procedures and treatments side effects arise. So with the help of medical translation, these complications are made understood to the patients as well as their solutions. With patient safety programs, patient education is enhanced.
